MACHUPICCHU is located in a very special place made up of mountains, glaciers, rivers, creeks, cascades, springs and exuberant flora & fauna. All these elements played a role of great importance inside the Andean cosmovision and the reason why was built from this sanctuary was to visualize big “Apus”, or mountain protectors, such as “Salcantay” or “Salkantay” Mountain, “Willkaweqhe” or Veronica Mountain , “Pumasillu” Mountain, and others.

The “Waynapicchu” mountain for example; possesses on its summit and hill important tructures. From its summit, one can observe big “Apus” like Salkantay, Veronica, Pumasillo, and the deep Urubamba canyon where the big river, “Willcamayu” or Urubamba, runs.  Mountain to the south was used for very important astronomical-religious purposes too. This mountain was considered special since it provided the water to the city. The Incas found two natural springs behind the top of this mountain.
