Physical classification

INTENSIVE, CHALLENGE: Designed for active travelers with a lot of experience and in excellent physical and health condition. Trips of 5 to 8 days fall into this category. Day hikes (8-9 hours), mountainous, some very steep terrain (ascending or descending up to 4,000 feet) over several days, with camping and hiking at extreme elevations. Most hikes are at elevations above 11,500 feet, with some days reaching 16,850 feet with some exposed sections.

Important note

Although we expected the trek to be like the route described in 6-Day Ausangate Trek. Participants must accept that there is the possibility of changes, being necessary depending on local conditions, for example, strikes, natural disasters, these changes may be at the discretion of your travel agent.

Accommodation

Are provided a 4-Season Tents, Therma-Rest mattresses and pillows, the tents are spacious and comfortable, designed for 4 people, but only used for 2 people.

Group size

Minimum 2 people, Maximum 8 people.

A minimum of 02 people is required to go out. Family groups, travelers as a couple, with friends or even if you travel ALONE, you are welcome on our trips. The price is per person, based on two people sharing a room/tent. The route is described and based on shared services as well as semi-private service; however, if you are looking for a private service, it would be on request.

Limited places

No, the number of people to visit this park is not limited yet, the entrance ticket can be purchased at the main checkpoint (the entrance ticket is included); so, you can book this hike even a week in advance.

Acclimatization

We recommended a minimum of 2 days in the city of Cusco before the start of your 6-Day Ausangate trek.

Short Trek Itinerary

DAY 1: Cusco – Tinki – Upis

We’ll leave Cusco at 06:30 a.m and visit Urcos Market, and then we’ll continue over Ccatca pass to Tinki; in the afternoon we’ll walk to Upis camp.

DAY 2: Upis – Pucaqocha – Ananta

Enjoy the Ausangate trek that passes through small communities where people still speak Inca language: Quechua.

DAY 3: Ananta – Rainbow Mountain – Ausangate Qocha

Today’s trek will be through the shadows of the Ausangate Mountain; we olso will explore the most popular Mountain – The Rainbow Mountina

DAY 4: Ausangate Qocha – Palomani Pass – Surapampa camp

Observe the different colours of the lagoons that surround the Ausangate Mountain.

DAY 5: Surapampa camp – Hampa – Phacchanta

Observe the wildlife of the Ausangate trek; we will see herd of llamas, alpacas the wild Vicuñas and Chinchillas Mountain.

DAY 6: Phacchanta – Tinki – Cusco

Two-hour trek observing the native agriculture until Tinki; then, we will take the bus to return to Cusco.

Detailed Trek itinearry for 6-Day Ausangate Trek

Day 1: Cusco – Tinqui – Upis

The Trip will begin when we pick you up at 6:30 a.m. from your hotel in Cusco, and travel in our private van to the starting point of our trek at the base of the majestic Ausangate Mountain. The car trip will last for approximately 4:30 hours; Along the route we’ll stop to take pictures in the viewpoints. We will start the trek from “Upis Pampa”. You will hike through many isolated villages with many stream crossings until you reach Upis camp. Here we spend the night in our private camp. They are in front of the Ausangate glacier, from the camp you can see how the sunset is over the snowy Ausangate. Our cook will prepare a delicious dinner for you.

Day 2: Upis – Ananta

We’ll wake you up at 5:30 a.m. m. with coca tea or coffee delivered to your tents by your cook; then you will be served a delicious breakfast in the dinning tent. After breakfast we’ll start trekking gentle up to Arapa pass (4968 m). Along the way we will observe local farmers, alpacas and LLamas, the snowy Ausangate to your left, and you will have an English-speaking guide who will explain the flora, fauna and landscape along the way. if we are lucky, we can see condors, chinchillas and vicuñas. In addition, we will enjoy colorful lakes and arrive at Pucacocha, where we our lunch will be served. You will be surrounded by high mountains and amazing hanging glaciers; we will watch and listen as the glacier crashes into the lakes below! As usual. After Lunch well 2-hours walk up to the Pucapunta Pass (5,100m); from where we’ll descent one hour to Ananta camp.

Day 3: Ananta – Rainbow Mountain – Ausangate Qocha.

We’ll start very early with one hour gentle up to Surini Pass (15,090ft – 4,500m) from where you can see in the distance the popular rainbow mountain. From Here will take us 1:30 hours to reach the viewpoint of the rainbow Mountain. We’ll see the mountain before the tourist arrive from Cusco.
After we rest and take enough pictures of the rainbow Mountain we’ll return by the same way to Ananta where our lunch will be served.

In the Afternoon we’ll walk for 2:30 hours an undulating trail, bordering the Pucapunta Mountain until we reach the Ausangate Qocha camp.

Day 4: Ausangate Qocha – Palomani Pass – Surapampa camp.

Today we will reach the highest point of our trek, Palomani Pass. After your delicious breakfast, you will start the trek to the Palomani Pass (1:45 hrs). Along the way you will pass through beautiful colored lakes, swampy and green pampas, alpacas, llamas and local people wearing their traditional clothes. Once we pass the Palomani pass we’ll descent for 1 hours where we will see the red lake and an incredible view of the Vilcanota range. Then we will descend to Huchuy Pinaya where we will have lunch and then we will continue the trek for 2 hours walk to Surapampa camp where we will spend the night. This camp is located near a rocky area and we will see many vizcachas perched on the rocks.

Day 5: Surapampa camp – Hampa – 7 lakes of Ausangate – Pacchanta.

After good breakfast served by our trekking cook, we continue our trek toward the las pass. After passing through the small community of Q’ampa we will head North west to the last pass of this hike, the Q’ampa pass (5000 metres/ 16400 feet). From here will descend through an old moraine, we will see several different colored lakes. Our lunch will be served next to a beautiful lake called Komer Q’ocha. After lunch we’ll rest and you can refill your water bottle, the we’ll hike for 3-hours before arriving at the small village of Pacchanta; Here you can soak in the natural thermal springs, and even have a well-deserved beer! Our camp we’ll be setup in the community of Pacchanta and you will have the afternoon free to explore this interesting Andean village. (You have the option of staying in a basic hostel this night)

Day 6: Pacchanta – Tinki – Cusco

After Breakfast we leave Pacchanta and start to walk back to the village of Tinqui – our trek takes approximately 3 hours. Once in Tinqui, we board our transportation that will take us back to the city of Cusco, where we estimate to arrive at noon.

Payment details

For the 6-day Ausangate trek, we require a non-refundable trek deposit of $200 USD per person. The deposit can be sent by a WESTERN UNION or to our BANK ACCOUNT by money transfer. This is the fastest and most secure form of payment in Peru. The money transfer should be in the name of “SUNRISE PERU TREK TOUR OPERATOR E.I.R.L”. Once you arrive in Cusco, you must pay the remaining balance in cash prior to beginning your tour. We accept both US Dollars and Peruvian Soles (local currency).
