Other alternative is to take the train in the station of locality of Ollantaytambo, at three o’clock in the afternoon approximately, after visiting the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
The trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu starts in the Poroy (Estación de Poroy) situated at 30 minutes from the city of Cusco. The train leaves at 8.00 am, being necessary, for greater safety, to acquire the ticket with a day of anticipation. That train leaves every. During the trip you can appreciate a panoramic view of Cusco city. In the place called El Arco, the Arch, we can see a Spanish aqueduct, what was bringing water to Cusco from the Piura y lagoon. From this point the train starts to descend until Puente Ruinas; Bridge of Ruins, whose difference of altitude with the Cusco is 1.800 meters.
Passing the Arch we are in the province of Anta, which is a vast flatness devoted to the agriculture. The name of Anta is the Quechua word for copper. From there it is appreciated the highway that leads to the town of Chinheros, to Urubamba and Ollantayfambo, places with singular touristic attractions of landscape and culture. The first station of importance is Station of lzcuchaca, where it can be taken the train if you are late.
In a place of this vast pampa was a blood y battle between the Incas and the Chankas. The Incas by command of young Tupac Inca Yupanqui, afterwards Emperor “Pachacutec”, defeated to the ferocious Chanka, tribes natives from the central part of Peru, who were proposed to invade Cusco. For the quantity of apportioned blood, the place was called in Quechua Yawarpampa or «Prairy of Blood «.
After crossing the pampa of Anta, we passed about town of “Warocondo”, then we enter in the bankrupt of “Pomatales”, where it is appreciated the creek of the same name, it is one of the tributaries of the Vilcabamba or Urubamba river, that will appear below.
After it we arrived to the Station of Pachar, what is part of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It is so designated because the valley is furrowed in all its extension by the river Vilcanota or “Willcamayu”, which was considered sacred river by the Incas. It is a great valley with benign and fertile climate.
There they are cultivated potatoes, corn, beans and different classes of fruits as peaches, plums, frutillas -berries-, apples, pears, etc. It is a valley of abundance for the delight of people of past and present days.
The trip continues along Vilcanota River. From Machu Picchu it will take the name of High Urubamba. From Station of Pachar it can be appreciated hundreds of Inca agricultural platforms “Andenes”; which were used at present times to cultivate agricultural products. From this site it can be observed that river is channeled by lateral walls from the Inca time. Then we arrived to Ollanta train Station, where is found the famous Inca city and fortress of Ollantaytambo, built in the XV century by Inca “Pachacutec”. Equally, from this place and for all the distance, we can see the beautiful snowed peaks of the mountain chain called “La Verónica”.
Upon arriving to the kilometer 88 or Qoriwayrachina Station, it is found the beginning of the more famous adventure road of America, the Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu or the “Camino Inka”; the Road of the Incas, with a distance of 45 kilometers which can be traveled in three or four days, visiting the archaeological complexes of “Patallaqta”, “Runkuraka y”, “Sayaqmarca” , “Phuyupatamarca”, “Intipata” and “Wiñayhuaina”, ending in Machu Picchu . This road, after a trek of five kilometers or three hours approximately, leads to the archaeological set of Wiñayhuayna, one of the most beautiful than I know.
