The route to Choquequirao Trek is said to be one of the most grueling treks around, covering over 60km and climbing up to 3,545m, and none are more challenging than this deep canyon trek. The four-day Choquequirao Trek, was opened recently for visitors; it is a spectacular 60km trek through the Peruvian Andes. Choquequirao is an Inca site located in the stunning landscape of the Vilcabamba mountain range over the Apurimac Canyon; Choquequirao probably was visited by Mr. Hiram Bingham in 1910 after this he discovered Machu Picchu in 1911. This route offers us a formidable trek across diverse ecosystems.

Choquequirao is considered as the other Machu Picchu which means «Golden Cradle» in Quechua «Inca language», although this is probably not its original name. It is another «Lost City of the Incas» rediscovered officially later in the 20th century, it’s surrounded by towering Salkantay and Humantay snowcapped peaks.

DAY 1: Playa Rosalina

We’ll leave Cusco at 05:00 a.m and travel to Capuliyoc zone from where we’ll start our lifetime trip.

DAY 2: Choquequirao

Arriving to Choquequirao in the afternoon, we’ll see the sunset over the Apurimac Canyon.

DAY 3: Choquequirao

Explore the mysterious Choquequirao Inca ruins and return to «Playa Rosalina».

DAY 4: Cusco

Enjoy the most difficult part of the trek before we return to Cusco and arrive there in the evening.



The Choquequirao Trek begins once we pick you up from your hotel at 05:30 a.m and travel in our private transport for 5 hours approximately to Capuliyoc zone (starting point of the trek), here we will meet our trekking crew (chef, horses and muleteers – «Arrieros»).

On the way, we will make a stop to enjoy our breakfast admiring the wonderful and amazing Limatambo Canyon; during the trip, we will pass through picturesque and small towns like: Izcuchaca, Limatambo, Curahuasi and Cachora. We’ll start trekking and very soon, we will have a fascinating view of Choquequirao in the other side of the Canyon, then we’ll continue a long zigzag down to «Playa Rosalina» where we can observe different types of cactus and interesting wildlife; the campsite will be warm.

After breakfast, we will leave early and cross the Apurimac River and start climbing towards Santa Rosa, zigzagging up a steep slope. This climb will take an approximated 2 hour-time, and it is important to leave early so that the high temperature does not make it more difficult than it has to be, After a good rest at Santa Rosa place, we’ll continue our trek slowly climbing for 2 and a half hours to Marampata zone; here our lunch will be served.

From here, we’ll walk another 2 hours and we’ll arrive at the archaeological complex of Choquequirao, located at 3,050 masl, here, we will set up our camp and enjoy the afternoon overlooking the Apurimac Canyon and seeing the sunset some times the Andean condors (the biggest flying birds) passing through.

After a good breakfast, we will explore this extraordinary Choquequirao archaeological complex with our guide who will explain to us with all the details and lead us through every important place, we will then have extra time to explore and take pictures; after we finish our lunch, we will be served then, we’ll return to «Playa Rosalina» and set up our camp.

Choquequirao was one of the entrance checkpoints to the Vilcabamba and «Espiritu Pampa», and also an administrative center serving political, social and economic functions. Its urban design has followed the symbolic patterns of the imperial capital, with ceremonial places dedicated to the Sun (Inti) and the ancestors, to the earth, water and other divinities, with mansions for administrators and houses for artisans, warehouses, large dormitories or «kallankas» and farming terraces belonging to the Incas or the local people.

After breakfast, we’ll continue slowly up to Capuliyoc. We will still be able to enjoy the Apurimac Canyon as we follow a new trail that crosses the throat of the canyon. We will have an impressive view of the Canyon from Wayna Qalli; this canyon is considered to be one of the most spectacular in South America. Finally, we will arrive at Capuliyoc and take our transport and return to Cusco. We will arrive in the evening; you will be transferred to your hotel.

Trek payment facts

For Choquequirao Trek 4 days, we require a non-refundable trek deposit of $150 USD per person. The deposit can be sent by a WESTERN UNION or to our BANK ACCOUNT by money transfer. This is the fastest and most secure form of payment in Peru. The money transfer should be in the name of «SUNRISE PERU TREK» TOUR OPERATOR E.I.R.L. Once you arrive in Cusco, you must pay the remaining balance in cash prior to beginning your tour. We accept both US Dollars and Peruvian Soles (local currency).
