This six-day Ausangate Trek from Cusco to the highest mountain of the region visits the best national parks and Native Peruvian lands that the eastern of Cusco has to offer. Travel along the picturesque communities. “Ausangate” (20,940 feet / 6,371 masl) is the highest mountain of Cusco region. On a clear day, the peak is visible from Cusco city. The snow-capped peaks of this area are the second largest Peruvian glaciated system after the aptly named “Cordillera Blanca/White Mountain Range”. During the Ausangate Trek we’ll use brand new camping equipment which will be transported by horses; you’ll hike with your small backpack carrying water and snacks and enjoying the marvelous scenery.

Peru offers you a wide range of very famous trekking programmes around the word for their beautiful landscape. Southeast of Cusco, the amazing Vilcanota mountain range includes a number of peaks of which Ausangate is the highest 6,371 masl. On a clear day, the peak is visible from Cusco. The snow-capped peaks of this area are the second largest Peruvian glaciated systems after the aptly named “Cordillera Blanca”.

DAY 1: Tinki

We’ll leave Cusco at 09:30 a.m and visit Urcos Market, and then we’ll continue over Ccatca pass to Tinki.

DAY 2: Upis

Enjoy the Ausangate trek that passes through small communities where people still speak Inca language: Quechua.

DAY 3: Abra Arapa

Today’s trek will be through the shadows of the Ausangate Mountain.

DAY 4: Palomani Pass  5,200m

Observe the different colours of the lagoons that surround the Ausangate Mountain.

DAY 5: Phacchanta

Observe the wildlife of the Ausangate trek; we will see herd of llamas, alpacas the wild Vicuñas and Chinchillas Mountain.

DAY 6: Cusco

Two-hour trek observing the native agriculture until Tinki; then, we will take the bus to return to Cusco.

The Ausangate Trek starts once we pick you up from your hotel at 09:00 a.m, we’ll take our private transport and we’re gonna head toward the south of Cusco city. Half-hour after, we will arrive to the town of Urcos, here we will stop to visit traditional market where locals exchange their products; after that, we’ll continue the journey up towards the highest point (4,600 masl) where we will stop to observe the mountain range of Vilcanata and Ccatca village below us; we will also stop at Rumicolca Inca ruins. We will arrive at Tinki (3,800 masl) town at approximately 04:30 p.m and set up our camp in the outskirts of this town under the bright sky of the Vilcanota mountain range. Today, we won’t trek.

DAY 2: TINKI (3,800 masl) – UPIS (4,430 masl)

  After breakfast, we’ll leave Tinki trekking towards the south on a gentle gradient with a magnificent view of the snowcapped mountain of Ausangate. The surroundings which will border us are typical of Puna region, where Andean people raise llama and alpaca shepherd; the “ichu” (local wild grass) and the wind will be our companions. We will reach the Upis Pampa and set up our campsite with a spectacular view.

  After breakfast, we’ll continue our trek gradually up to Arapa pass (4,800 masl) where we will be rewarded by magnificent views of the nature that combines the snow mountains, red coloured mountains and different coloured lakes; Just after the pass, we will stop for our lunch and then continue the Ausangate trek through this exceptional mountain scenery until Hatun Pucaccocha where we will set up our camp.

  Following the trek in the morning, we will cross a small pass named Pucapunta pass (red colour mountain pass) from where we could enjoy Ausangate Lake; then, we’ll descend to the shores of this lake and later we will trek up toward the highest pass of “Abra Palomani” (5,200 masl). From here, our descent will take us 2 hours and 30min to the settlement of Huchuy Phinaya where we will camp, surrounded by an outstanding mountain scenery.

  After breakfast, we’ll continue the Ausangate trek toward Hampa pass, and then descend through the ancient moraine and surrounded by different size of rocks which are the habitat for Chinchillas (Andean rabbit), also colourful lakes and many llamas and alpacas continuing the trek, we’ll arrive to Phacchanta camp where we’re gonna find natural thermal baths and you could go to relax the muscles after this long trek.

  We’re gonna leave our campsite early and continue towards Tinki; 3 hour-hike downhill through a beautiful agricultural pasture where we will see native crops like potatoes, oxalis, beans, and quinoa. The trail descends, passing pastures and several communities of friendly people who will greet you in their native language, Quechua. At Tinki, the bus will be waiting for us to return to Cusco and transfer you to your hotel.

Transportation: Private bus from Cusco to Tinki (starting point of Ausangate trek) and from Tinki to Cusco.
  Guide: English-speaking guide (2 guides for groups over 8 people).

  Horses or llamas: For camping equipment, food and cooking gear as well to carry your personal items (7kg per person) in duffel bags that Sunrise provides.
  Others: First aid kit and emergency oxygen bottle.


Sleeping bag: Can be rented in our office for $30 USD for the entire trek.

Payment details

For the 6-day Ausangate trek, we require a non-refundable trek deposit of $200 USD per person. The deposit can be sent by a WESTERN UNION or to our BANK ACCOUNT by money transfer. This is the fastest and most secure form of payment in Peru. The money transfer should be in the name of “SUNRISE PERU TREK TOUR OPERATOR E.I.R.L”. Once you arrive in Cusco, you must pay the remaining balance in cash prior to beginning your tour. We accept both US Dollars and Peruvian Soles (local currency).
